Another failure of Google Stadia: low-quality stream and lack of 4K in Red Dead Redemption 2

One of the main claimed benefits of a Google Stadia Pro premium subscription is streaming in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, if the Internet connection allows it. But testing the service showed that at the moment it is not possible to get this opportunity. Analysis Red Dead Redemption 2 on Google Stadia indicates that the service is not currently capable of delivering games in 4K at 60fps. The same applies, by the way, to Destiny 2, which plays at 1080p (upscaled to 4K) and at medium graphics settings.

Digital Foundry tested Red Dead Redemption 2 on Google Stadia and found that the Pro subscription runs the game at 1440p at 30fps; and on the standard - 1080p with an eye on 60 frames / s. In practice, if Stadia detects that your connection can provide high bandwidth streaming, with a more expensive subscription you have the choice between 4K resolution at a lower frame rate or 1080p but aiming for 60 fps, but performance is often less than desired .

Digital Foundry also notes that video compression has a significant impact on the overall visual quality of Red Dead Redemption 2 on both stream settings, which is most noticeable in the first chapter. β€œMany edges overall look significantly fuzzier and less soft [on the Pro] compared to the 1080p stream,” said Alex Battaglia, β€œmajor video compression artifacts will of course remain, so general macro blocking and color banding are present [ and in 1080p]".

While Red Dead Redemption 2's graphics suffered on Google Stadia, the service does offer poor response times. In a 1080p stream, input lag on the Stadia version is just 29 milliseconds longer than on PC at 60 fps (and triple buffering), and 50 milliseconds faster than on the Xbox One X.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Google Stadia.
