One of the MySQL developers criticized the project and recommended using PostgreSQL

Steinar H. Gunderson, one of the authors of the Snappy compression library and a participant in the development of IPv6, announced his return to Google, where he once developed image search services and offline maps, but will now be involved in the development of the browser Chrome. Prior to this, Steinar worked for five years at Oracle on modernizing the MySQL database optimizer. Steinar's note is notable for its critical attitude towards the prospects of MySQL and its recommendation to switch to PostgreSQL.

According to Steinar, MySQL is very outdated and ineffective, despite the fact that most users and developers believe that everything is in order, not bothering to compare with other DBMSs that have long gone ahead. The optimizations implemented for MySQL 8.x significantly improved the performance of the query optimizer compared to MySQL 5.7, but in general the work is assessed as bringing it to the level of technology of the early 2000s. To further bring MySQL to an acceptable state, Oracle does not allocate the necessary resources, which prevents it from being maintained as a competitive product. The situation in the MariaDB DBMS is no better, especially after the departure of Michael β€œMonty” Widenius’ team, dissatisfied with new trends in project management.
