The official Unity Editor is now available on Linux

It is stated that for many years they offered an unofficial experimental editor, but now we are talking about an official product. The preview version is currently available, and the creators are collecting feedback and criticism on forum. Unity 2019.3 is expected to receive full editor support on Linux.

It is noted that the demand for Unity is growing in various areas, from the gaming to the film industry, from the automotive industry to transport management. Therefore, the range of supported operating systems is also expanding.

The editor is available to all users of Personal (free), Plus and Pro licenses starting with Unity 2019.1. The developers promised to make the new product as reliable and stable as possible. The system requirements look like this:

  • OS Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04;
  • OS CentOS 7;
  • Processor architecture x86-64;
  • the Gnome desktop environment running on top of an X11 graphics server;
  • official NVIDIA or AMD Mesa proprietary graphics driver.

Download the latest builds can be found in the Unity Hub.

Note that this is not the first time that serious programs or development systems related to games have been ported to Linux. Formerly Valve initiated a Proton project to run games from Steam on a free OS. This is expected to expand the scope of Linux to gaming PCs as well.
