OpenBSD 7.9

On May 19, the 60th anniversary release of the OpenBSD operating system was quietly and unnoticed.

Among the changes:

  • improved support for arm64, luna88k, riscv64, and other architectures;
  • Fix FP-DSS vulnerability on amd64;
  • The sysctl mechanism hw.smt has been deprecated in favor of hw.blockcpu to exclude certain types of cores from the scheduler (useful for Intel processors);
  • The delayed hibernation mechanism, known in systemd as suspend-then-hibernate, has been implemented;
  • improvements in SMP;
  • DRM component from the kernel Linux updated to version 6.18.22;
  • Many bugs in the VMM/VMD virtualization subsystem have been fixed;
  • Many improvements to user space programs, such as login being able to set the XDG_RUNTIME_DIR environment variable needed by Wayland compositors;
  • Improved support for network devices, in particular:
    • Added support for 160 MHz channel width in the 5 GHz range in the iwx driver;
    • added basic support for 802.11ax (WiFi 6);
  • improvements to the pledge and unveil subsystems;
  • IPv6 autoconf (DHCP) is enabled by default in the installer;
  • LibreSSL version 4.3.0;
  • OpenSSH version 10.3;
  • and much more that you can explore on your own.

For the amd64 platform, 13044 binary packages have been prepared, including Chromium 147, Firefox 150, GCC 15.2.0, LLVM/Clang 19.1.7 and 20.1.8, GNOME 49, KDE Plasma 6.6.4, Wayland composers Niri, Mango, LabWC, Sway, Wayfire.

For the first time after the break, an official song, however, the Russian-speaking community has prepared and unofficial song.
