OpenELA announced kernel 4.14 lifecycle extension

The association of manufacturers of RedHat-like enterprise distributions OpenELA, which includes CtrlIQ (Rocky Linux), Oracle Linux and SUSE, announced the opening of a new project Kernel-LTS, within which support for LTS kernels will be extended. And the first kernel with long-term support will be kernel 4.14.

In January, the core development team stopped supporting kernel 4.14, which was released in November 2017 and was supported for 6 years. Now kernel support will be extended at least until the end of 2024.

There will be no restrictions, such as being tied to specific equipment or products. Thus, the life cycle of the 32-bit architecture, if desired, by developers of independent distributions, even in the event of changes in the main branch of Linux development, can be significantly extended due to this option.
