OpenIndiana is an operating system based on OpenSolaris. It is part of the Illumos Foundation and provides a true open source alternative to Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express, including an open development model and full community participation.

The project's latest release, OpenIndiana Hipster 2019.10, migrates some of the tools from Python 2 to version 3 along with several package updates.

According to the developers, during this development cycle, work was done to update IPS, port the remaining OpenIndiana applications to Python 3, and rewrite some private binaries DDUs.

The following desktop software and libraries are included with the operating system:

  • VirtualBox updated to 6.0.14.
  • Updated Xorg fonts, tools and libraries.
  • FreeType has been updated to 2.10.1.
  • GTK 3 updated to 3.24.12.
  • LightDM updated to 1.30.
  • The x265 and mpack packages have been added, the x264 version has been updated, a nice Powerline status bar has been added, integrated with Bash, tmux and Vim.
  • Added optional x11-init service to create necessary root directories prior to X11 applications.
