LineageOS 23.2 mobile platform released

LineageOS 23.2, the mobile platform that continues to develop the Android 16-based codebase, is now available. LineageOS 23.2 has reached parity in functionality and stability with 23.0 and is considered ready for release. Builds have been prepared for 148 device models. LineageOS can also be run in the Android Emulator, QEMU, and Android Studio. Additionally, builds are available for Android TV and Android Automotive modes.

The release of LineageOS 23.2 is notable for its synchronization with the current codebase from the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repository, corresponding to the second quarterly platform update for Android 16 (QPR2). The release of LineageOS 23.1 was skipped, as AOSP is now updated semi-annually instead of quarterly. Going forward, LineageOS will release interim releases twice a year, rather than four times.

Among the functional changes in LineageOS 23.2, a new design and color scheme are included, aligned with the Material Expressive 3 design concept introduced in Android 16. Apps have been updated and, where possible, migrated to the Material Expressive design. Among other things, the new design is featured in the Twelve Music Player, Deskclock, and ExactCalculator.

The quick settings drop-down panel interface has been updated—tiles in the panel are now fully customizable. In addition to the basic design theme, an optional extended dark theme is now available. The functionality of file management utilities has been expanded. Firmware developers now have several new utilities for extracting RRO (Runtime Resource Overlay), updating application certificates, and extracting SELinux rules and configuration files from system images.

A significant redesign of the firmware update management app (Updater) was also highlighted, featuring a completely redesigned interface, improved update management, and the addition of a progress animation. The redesigned Updater is not yet ready for inclusion in LineageOS 23.2, but will be released in due course once it achieves the required level of stability.
