Experienced creators will be able to sell their content in Dreams - so far as part of a beta test

User-generated content within a game like Dreams inevitably comes with copyright issues. Media Molecule has taken the first step towards solving this problem - the studio is launching beta testing of commercial sales for experienced creators.

In a blog post, Media Molecule studio director Siobhan Reddy explains that players own the intellectual property of their original creations in Dreams. But commercial use is risky. Therefore, the studio will start with beta testing for now.

“We've had a lot of questions from content creators about using Dreams for viable business opportunities outside of PlayStation, such as concept work. We welcome and encourage creators to do this, but this is new territory for us. We've been busy behind the scenes mapping out how we can make this easier for creators in the future. We are starting this with a beta test where creators can apply to use Dreams for a specific project,” Reddy said.

If you want to qualify, you must file Media Molecule application. You will need to specify the project, the time frame for its production, and be prepared to provide feedback to the Dreams developers throughout the process. It will only be available to early access members "in good standing" and will focus on "concept art, music videos, albums and short films."

The issue of rights and ownership remains an open question in games like Dreams. Last year there was a massive boom in auto chess, which led to the formation of a genre from a simple mod for Dota 2. Warcraft III: Reforged Blizzard Entertainment undertook controversial steps to ensure she owns the content created in the strategy. Media Molecule is doing the opposite, but selling Dreams games is likely still a long way off.

Dreams is available on PlayStation 4.
