EFF deprecates HTTPS Everywhere project

Non-profit human rights organization Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) announced the decision to deprecate the HTTPS Everywhere browser add-on. The HTTPS Everywhere add-on was shipped for all popular browsers and allowed all sites to use HTTPS where possible, solving the problem with sites that provide unencrypted access by default but support HTTPS, as well as resources that use links from a safe area to unencrypted pages .

At the end of this year, the development of the add-on will be stopped, but to smooth the process of stopping the use of HTTPS Everywhere, during 2022 the project will be left in maintenance mode, which implies the possibility of releasing updates if serious problems are identified. The reason for the collapse of HTTPS Everywhere is the appearance in browsers of standard options for automatically redirecting to HTTPS when opening a site via HTTP. In particular, starting with Firefox 76, Chrome 94, Edge 92 and Safari 15 browsers support HTTPS Only mode.
