The GNOME-X11 project has begun development on a fork of GNOME 50, which reinstates the ability to run under the X server. The project is being developed by an independent enthusiast, not affiliated with the GNOME community. Currently, the project's repository contains forks of the gnome-settings-daemon, mutter, gdm, gnome-control-center, gnome-shell, gnome-session, and libshew components, which revert the commits that removed X11 support.
