Huawei founder: US underestimated the power of the company

The founder of the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Ren Zhengfei (Ren Zhengfei, pictured below) said that granting a temporary license to defer US government restrictions for 90 days doesn't really matter to the company, as it was prepared for such a development.

“By their actions, the US government is currently underestimating our capabilities,” Ren said in an interview with CCTV.

“At this critical moment, I am grateful to the American companies that have made a great contribution to the development of Huawei and have shown good faith in this matter,” the founder of the company said. “As far as I know, American companies are making efforts to convince the US government to allow them to cooperate with Huawei.”

He noted that Huawei has always needed US-designed chipsets, and it would be narrow-minded to completely refuse US supplies.

Ren said U.S. trade restrictions will not affect Huawei's 5G rollout and that it's unlikely anyone will be able to match the Chinese company's technology in the next two to three years.

Ren, 74, doesn't like public speaking and almost never gives interviews. However, he has been increasingly in the spotlight lately due to the recent escalation of tensions between his company and Washington, at the request of which his daughter Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, was arrested in Vancouver. Ren's background as an engineer in China's People's Liberation Army before founding Huawei also raised suspicions about the company's ties to the Chinese government.
