TSMC's main 5nm products will be Kirin 1020 and Apple A14 Bionic platforms

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC earlier today reported earnings for the first quarter of 2020. The company's revenue was about NT$310,6 billion, up 2,1% from the previous quarter. Compared to the same period last year, the growth was 42%. The largest profit, 35% of the total income, was brought to the company by the production of chips according to the standards of the improved 7-nm process technology.

The next step for the company is the production of chips according to the 5nm process technology. The company has already started mass production under the new norms and is expected to reach full capacity in the second half of the year. Since TSMC's 5nm process is the only one in the world ready for mass production, it is expected that the chips made on it will bring the company about 10% of annual revenue.

According to official data, a 5nm chip based on the Cortex-A72 core will be able to provide 1,8 times more density, 15% faster speed and 30% lower power consumption than a similar 7nm processor.

The new process technology will be used mainly in the production of the A14 Bionic and Kirin 1020 chipsets for Apple and Huawei, respectively. According to preliminary data, the Apple A14 Bionic processor will cross the 3 GHz mark. As for the Kirin 1020, there are no confirmed data about it yet. However, there is speculation that Huawei's new mobile chipset will be built using Cortex-A78 cores.

The Apple A14 Bionic is expected to launch with the iPhone 12 series of smartphones, while the HiSilicon Kirin will be introduced alongside the Huawei Mate 40.
