Recruitment to a free online school for Open Source developers is open

Until August 13, 2021, we are enrolling in a free online school for those who want to start working in Open Source - "Community of Open Source Newcomers" (COMMoN), organized as part of the Samsung Open Source Conference Russia 2021. The project is aimed at helping young developers to start their journey as a contributor. The school will allow you to gain experience in interacting with the open source community, and will give you a chance to make your first commit to a serious Open Source project.

The format of the online school includes lectures for the general flow and work within a specific direction (track). In each track, a group of up to 20 people is recruited. Together with the teacher, participants will go from scratch to contributing to a real project. In the final, students defend their final thesis aimed at solving a practically significant problem of a specific open source project. The authors of the best works will receive awards from the partner companies of the tracks. You can apply for participation on the project page.

COMMoN school tracks:

  • Track "Arenadata DB". DBMS Arenadata DB, built on the basis of a massively parallel DBMS Greenplum, is designed for storage systems of large amounts of data with a high load. The track will be devoted to the development of tools for Arenadata DB and other components of the Arenadata EDP multifunctional data platform. Participants will develop utilities for uploading/downloading data and implementing backups, as well as a plugin for managing security.
  • Track "ROS - Samsung". Robot Operation System is an Open Source project in the field of robot control for various platforms. Samsung is one of the main contributors to the project. On the track, it will be proposed to solve one of the practical problems of robot navigation in the Navigation2 Stack and check its performance on the Gazebo simulator.
  • The track "DeepPavlov - MIPT". DeepPavlov is an open platform for developing voice assistants and chatbots (track partner is MIPT). In the practical part of the training, participants will master the tools and techniques for developing AI assistants, as well as managing complex modern distributed systems based on microservice architecture and containerization.
