L0phtCrack password auditing software source code open

The source texts of the L0phtCrack toolkit have been published, designed to recover passwords using hashes, including using the GPU to speed up password guessing. The code is open under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses. Additionally, plugins have been published for using John the Ripper and hashcat as engines for guessing passwords in L0phtCrack.

Starting with the release of L0phtCrack 7.2.0 published yesterday, the product will be developed as an open project and with community participation. Linking to commercial cryptographic libraries has been replaced by the use of OpenSSL and LibSSH2. Among the plans for further development of L0phtCrack, porting of the code to Linux and macOS is mentioned (initially only the Windows platform was supported). It is noted that porting will not be difficult, since the interface is written using the cross-platform Qt library.

The product has been developed since 1997 and was sold to Symantec in 2004, but was bought back in 2006 by the three founders of the project. In 2020, the project was absorbed by Terahash, but in July of this year the rights to the code were returned to the original authors due to failure to fulfill obligations under the deal. As a result, the creators of L0phtCrack decided to abandon the supply of tools in the form of a proprietary product and open source code.
