OWC Doubles SSD Capacity for Apple Mac

OWC has unveiled a new version of the 12TB Aura P4 solid-state drive (SSD), which will enable the company to double the capacity of its external drives for Apple Macintosh and other computers. So, the flagship Accelsior 4M2 with a speed of more than 6 GB / s will receive 16 GB of NAND flash memory.

OWC's products are primarily aimed at Apple computer users, but the company's devices also work with PCs based on the Microsoft Windows operating system. Issue OWC Aura P12 based on the Phison PS5012-E12 controller (eight NAND channels, NVMe 1.3, LDPC, up to 3400 MB / s) became possible due to the transition to the use of more capacious 3D TLC NAND flash memory chips (presumably from Kioxia), which is being done by all SSD manufacturers. However, unlike most SSDs with the PS5012-E12 controller, the Aura P12 supports TCG Opal and TCG Pyrite encoding, which is important for a number of OWC customers from the corporate and government sectors. In the US, the drive will cost $1150.

Since no Apple computer (from those presented so far) uses an SSD in the M.2-2280 form factor, the OWC Aura P12 is intended primarily for the corporation itself, which uses them for a number of external storage drives.

OWC's flagship SSD is the Accelsior 4M2 with PCI Express x8 interface, which uses up to four solid-state drives in the M.2 form factor in conjunction with the ASMedia ASM2824 PCIe communicator and proprietary OWC SoftRAID technology. The OWC Accelsior 4M2 is available in 1TB to 16TB models and can offer sequential read speeds up to 6318MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 6775MB/s. This drive is compatible with 2010/2012/2019 Apple Macs, or any Windows 10 system with a free PCIe 3.0 x8/x16 slot. The 16TB NAND version will cost $4800.

For professionals with powerful laptops, OWC offers storage Thunderblade Thunderbolt 3 interface. The device is based on four SSDs in the M.2-2280 form factor and is capable of offering sequential read speeds up to 2800 MB / s (up to 3800 MB / s when using two storage systems and SoftRAID technology) and sequential write speeds up to 2450 MB/s. The OWC product family includes ThunderBlades ranging from 1TB to 16TB, but few of them, including the flagship 16TB model, use the Aura P12. The price of this model is $4999.

For those looking for the ultimate in portable external storage, the OWC range includes Envoy Pro EX Thunderbolt 3 (up to 2800 MB/s) and Envoy Pro EX USB-C (up to 980 MB / s), which can also be equipped with Aura P12 with a capacity of 4 TB. The cost of such drives in the US is $1180 and $1130, respectively.

Although Apple itself has so far ignored M.2 drives, it's pretty funny to see how the release of one new model actually upgraded the entire family of external SSDs from one of the company's important partners.
