PCMark 10 Gets Two New Tests: Battery and Microsoft Office Applications

As expected, for Computex 2019, UL Benchmarks unveiled two new benchmarks for PCMark 10 Professional Edition. The first is for testing laptop battery life, and the second is performance in Microsoft Office applications.

Battery life is one of the most important factors when choosing a laptop. But it is difficult to measure and compare it, because it depends on the nature of the use of the device. PCMark 10 introduces a new approach within the Battery Life Profile. Instead of one option, PCMark 10 Battery Life Profile offers a choice of five common scenarios:

  • Modern Office measures battery life in typical work activities such as typing, web browsing and video conferencing;
  • "Applications" - in work tasks using Microsoft Office applications;
  • "Video" - when continuous video playback in full screen mode until the battery is exhausted;
  • "Games" - under a constant heavy load, so the battery life will be minimal;
  • "Simple" - in the absence of activity, that is, we will talk about the upper limit of battery life.

Comparing battery life profiles will give you the best understanding of the device's relative strengths. Battery life profiles will also help users choose the models that best suit their needs.

The second test concerns the evaluation of performance in tasks related to Microsoft Office. Enterprise purchasing managers and government IT customers often like to test and compare PC performance in the applications they use every day. PCMark 10 Applications is a new benchmark based on Microsoft Office applications that measures hands-on PC performance in the modern workplace:

  • Word covers typical text tasks of office workers - PC performance is measured when opening, editing and saving documents;
  • Excel - spreadsheet tasks - the test evaluates interaction with an easy spreadsheet and with a more complex one, for advanced users;
  • PowerPoint covers common tasks when working with presentations. The test measures your PC's performance when editing an image-heavy PowerPoint presentation.
  • The Edge test tests the browsing speed of websites, social networks, online stores, map services, and videos.

Both tests can also be used on computers running Windows 10 ARM, and the results promise to be directly comparable to those of conventional PCs with x86 processors.
