PeerTube started fundraising for new functionality, including live broadcasts

PeerTube is a free video hosting server that can be federated with other similar platforms using the protocol Activity Pub. On the client side, the functionality typical of a video service is implemented: channels, playlists, comments, likes / dislikes, and video playback works using the technology webtorrent, reducing the load on the main server, allowing you to "get up for distribution" like other servers, by enabling redundancy, and ordinary users while browsing. The project is being developed under the auspices of a non-profit company Framasoft, which announced the next fundraising.

This time, the semi-annual campaign focuses on what's in the upcoming PeerTube 3.0 when harvesting from:

  • €10,000 — global search (task for June):
    • PeerTube's servers, like the rest of ActivityPub's servers, are reportedly currently in a "federated bubble": video searches only work within the servers the user's server subscribes to, and not as efficiently as it could. This is supposed to be solved by creating a centralized index of videos from all servers present in the official list. The indexer will of course be optional and released under a free license;
    • the setting of system notifications on the main page (MOTD) from the administration will be added;
  • €20,000 — moderation tools (task for July):
    • Improvements are planned in moderation tools, such as adding an administration action log, a complaint management panel, the ability to respond to the sender of the complaint, exportable blacklists that can be shared with others, work on combating sabotage activity in general;
  • €40,000 — plugins and playlists (task for August-September):
    • at the moment, it is possible to embed only individual videos on websites, this functionality will be expanded to playlists;
    • it will be possible to add to the playlist not only the whole video, but also its separate pieces - clips;
    • improvements in the extension system and new official plugins are planned, for example, to add comments to the video progress bar;
  • €60,000live broadcasts (task for October-November):
    • the most technically difficult task is still feasible and the streams will work as an HLS stream with a delay of 30-60 seconds, saved as a regular video and eventually federated with the rest of the world, but at first there will be no social things like chat, likes and funny pictures.
