First independent tests GeForce RTX 3090: only 10% faster than GeForce RTX 3080

This week, the first video cards of the Ampere family, the GeForce RTX 3080, went on sale, and at the same time their reviews came out. Next week, on September 24, sales of the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 will start, and the results of its testing should appear at the same time. But the Chinese resource TecLab decided not to wait for the deadlines set by NVIDIA, and presented a review of the GeForce RTX 3090 right now.

To begin with, we recall that the GeForce RTX 3090 video card is built on the Ampere GA102 GPU, in a version with 10496 CUDA cores. It is currently the most advanced Ampere series GPU in the consumer segment. In the reference version, the chip has a base frequency of 1395 MHz, and the Boost frequency is declared at 1695 MHz. The video card is equipped with 24 GB of GDDR6X memory with an effective frequency of 19,5 GHz. Together with a 384-bit bus, this gives a throughput of 936 GB / s.

The system on which the GeForce RTX 3090 was tested was built on the flagship 10-core Core i9-10900K processor at 5 GHz. It was complemented by 32 GB of G.Skill DDR4-4133 MHz RAM. The tests were carried out at 4K resolution in synthetic and gaming loads. In games that support ray tracing and DLSS AI anti-aliasing, tests were conducted both with and without the options indicated.

In synthetics, the difference between the GeForce RTX 3080 and the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 was 7,1% and 10,5% in the 3DMark Time Spy Extreme and 3DMark Port Royal tests, respectively. Not the most impressive results, given that the recommended price of video cards is $699 and $1499, respectively.

A similar alignment of forces is obtained in games. Without ray tracing support, for example, in Far Cry, Assassins Creed Oddysey and others, the difference in frame rates between GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 ranged from 4,7 to 10,5%. In games that support ray tracing and DLSS, the maximum gap was 11,5%. This result was recorded in Death Stranding, and, ironically, with tracing and DLSS disabled.

It turns out that the average advantage of the GeForce RTX 3090 is 10%, despite the fact that this video card is more than twice as expensive as the GeForce RTX 3080. But it is worth noting that NVIDIA itself positions the GeForce RTX 3090 as the successor to the Titan RTX, that is, a semi-professional solution. Perhaps, in some work tasks, the potential of this card will be revealed much better.
