First results of porting Cinnamon to Wayland

The developers of the Linux Mint project have announced work on adapting the Cinnamon user shell to function in an environment based on the Wayland protocol. Experimental support for Wayland will appear in the Cinnamon 6.0 release scheduled for November, and an optional Wayland-based Cinnamon session will be offered for testing in the Linux Mint 21.3 release expected in December.

The porting is still in its early stages, and many of the features available when running Cinnamon in an X.org-based environment are not yet available or work inconsistently in a Wayland-based session. At the same time, when launched in the Wayland environment, window management and virtual desktops are already running, and most applications and components are launched, including the file manager and panel.

It is planned to bring Cinnamon to full operation in the Wayland environment before the release of Linux Mint 23, which will be released in 2026. After this, developers will consider switching to using a Wayland-based session by default. It is assumed that two years will be enough to debug work in Wayland and eliminate all existing problems.
