AMD recently released a rather unusual mobile graphics card.
The Radeon Pro 5600M graphics card is based on the Navi 12 GPU, which is very similar to the Navi 10 found in the Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT, for example. The novelty has 40 computing units, which means the presence of 2560 stream processors. But it works with a frequency of only 1035 MHz due to the need to meet the thermal package of 50 watts.
The key feature of the new graphics card for the MacBook Pro is the memory controller with HBM2 support, which in this case is connected to two memory stacks with a total of 8 GB. The memory bandwidth is 394 GB/s, which is significantly higher than previously offered Radeon Pro 5300M and Pro 5500M with GDDR6 memory.
The performance of the Radeon Pro 5600M turned out to be at an impressive level. So, in Geekbench 5 Metal, the new product is more than 50% ahead of the Radeon Pro 5500M. Moreover, in the same test, it lagged behind the Radeon Pro Vega 48 by only 12,9%.
In the Unigine Heaven test, the novelty also turned out to be faster than its mobile counterparts, and in addition, it also outperformed the desktop Radeon Pro Vega 48 and Vega 56. The latter, we recall, are used in iMac and iMac Pro monoblocks, respectively.
Finally, the Radeon Pro 5600M was significantly faster than all other mobile graphics cards used in Apple laptops in the Aztec Ruins and Manhattan 3.1 tests at 1440p.
In the end, we note that a new video card costs a lot. Upgrading from the Radeon Pro 5300M to the new Radeon Pro 5600M will cost you $800. As a result, the price of the most affordable configuration of the MacBook Pro 16 with the Radeon Pro 5600M will be $3200.
