Huawei P30 and P30 Pro First Impressions: Incredible Zoom Smartphones

Huawei's top smartphones are no longer conventionally divided into "popular" (P series) and "for business" (Mate series). It's just about the spring flagship, which demonstrates the company's achievements (primarily in the development of a mobile camera), and about the autumn, which represents the fresh HiSilicon platform. A kind of Huawei tick-tock, peeped from Intel.

Both in terms of dimensions, and in terms of the diagonal of the display, and in terms of a significant part of the technical characteristics, the Huawei P30/P30 Pro is a direct successor to the Mate 20/Mate Pro, respectively. But with a number of fresh decisions that should help the gadget support the impulse of the P20 Pro, which has changed the idea of what a flagship Huawei smartphone can be.

First of all, we will talk here about the more advanced and breakthrough Huawei P30 Pro, which offered a completely new type of camera - it is far from a fact that this smartphone will become more popular in the end (Huawei's pricing policy often creates an attractive situation for buying a “regular” smartphone P -series). But it’s more interesting to talk about Pro, and it demonstrates the approach and capabilities of Huawei’s mobile division much more.

Externally, Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are very similar - there is no such gap as there was between P20 / P20 Pro or Mate 20 / Mate 20 Pro. Shape with minimal rounding "thirties" reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S10. But this is where the commonality with him, in principle, ends. Instead of a front camera built into the screen, a waterdrop notch is used here - a more traditionalist solution, but also more practical. At least it will be more convenient to watch full-screen video on Huawei P30.

The back in both versions of the P30 is curved and covered with glass - expectedly slippery and easily soiled. The Mate 20 Pro initiative with its less flashy, but tenacious "fibrous" coating is not supported. Two color solutions will be available in Russia: light blue (with a gradient from pink to sky blue) and "Northern Lights" (gradient from dark blue to ultramarine). In total there are 5 versions of P30/P30 - amber-red, white and black are added to the already mentioned colors. The photo in this material shows smartphones in the color "Northern Lights". It looks spectacular - in the design of last year's flagships, the new items certainly win. Do not be surprised at the absence of inscriptions on the body - they will definitely be in the final samples, but we got acquainted with pre-production smartphones that hide their origin.

Huawei P30 Pro is equipped with a 6,47-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 (Full HD +). According to rumors, after the scandal with the Mate 20 Pro (a high percentage of defects), Huawei decided to abandon LG screens, ordering them now from Samsung, but company representatives do not give official confirmation of this information. The display is slightly larger than in Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but for some reason with a lower resolution. In theory, this has a positive effect on the autonomy of the device, but you will not see an ideal picture in terms of clarity. The display is curved, but there are no additional controls (in the manner of those found in the Samsung Galaxy or Sony Xperia) here.

Huawei P30 received a 6,1-inch OLED display of the same resolution. There is every reason to believe that this is the same matrix used in the Huawei P20 Pro. The screen is flat, does not bend at the edges, the frames around it are slightly more visible than in the Pro version. But in general, both smartphones are almost devoid of them, everything is up to date.

In the P30 Pro, the frame above the display has been further reduced by getting rid of the speaker slot. Instead, the sound is played directly through the screen using vibration (details could not be obtained on this type of speaker). And yes, indeed, the sound comes from the screen, and the quality is quite good, unlike the first Xiaomi Mi MIX, which apparently used this technology. Also, during a short test, we managed to check how much the sound that such a speaker emits spreads around the room (and how much everyone around hears your conversation) - no serious problems were noticed either.

Both versions of the P30 have an in-display fingerprint scanner. Considering that face recognition is available here only with the help of the front camera (no TOF sensor or IR sensor: there is simply no place on the “droplet” cutout), this is a little scary. Let me remind you that the Mate 20 Pro and then the Honor Magic2 used the first on-screen ultrasonic sensors in the history of Huawei - and they work worse than their competitors. The company claims that the situation has improved and the percentage of successful recognitions will be much higher, and the time it takes will be reduced to half a second. We'll check it out in full testing.

Housing Huawei P30 Pro is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard. But there was no information about the Huawei P30 at the time of writing - it probably either did not receive registered protection, or is protected according to the IP67 standard. I note that at the same time it has a mini-jack, while the P30 Pro lacks an analog audio jack.

The most important thing for most modern flagship smartphones, and for Huawei in particular, is, of course, the camera. Huawei P30 received a triple module, very close to what we saw in the Mate 20 Pro: 40 + 16 + 8 MP with aperture of ƒ / 1,8, ƒ / 2,2 and ƒ / 2,4, respectively. Each camera is responsible for its own focal length, thus achieving both a 40x optical zoom and a wide viewing angle. The monochrome sensor is not used, but the 9-megapixel one is made using a completely new SuperSpectrum technology, which uses not RGB photodiodes, but RYYB (yellow instead of green ones). The manufacturer claims that, despite the lack of a monochrome sensor, which has helped all Huawei smartphones since the P40 model to shoot with increased dynamic range and cope well in the dark, the picture quality jumped very much forward - this type of sensor should collect 1% more light than traditional RGB. There are still few details about this technology, we will definitely talk about it in more detail in a full review. The physical dimensions of the sensor are 1,7/30". O The optical stabilizer in the P40 works with the main (XNUMX-megapixel) and telephoto modules; phase detection autofocus is available at all focal lengths.

The Huawei P30 Pro version uses four cameras at once. The main one is a 40-megapixel SuperSpectrum sensor, like in the P30, but here it works with an ƒ / 1,6 lens (focal length - 27 mm), there is an optical stabilizer and phase detection autofocus. Limiting ISO is impressive too - ISO 409600.

The telephoto module is no less interesting: it uses an 8-megapixel RGB sensor and a lens with a relative aperture of only ƒ / 3,4, but it provides a 5x optical zoom (125 mm) - a "mine" of lenses is hidden in the case, allowing get this incredible result for a mobile device. Naturally, an optical stabilizer is available (which is helped by digital with the use of artificial intelligence), there is autofocus. And yes, you can shoot something with a five-fold or ten-fold (hybrid) zoom without problems - at least in artificial light, the "shake" is not noticeable, and the detail is quite acceptable. Digital zoom is available up to 50x.

The wide-angle module is the least interesting: RGB, 20 megapixels, aperture lens ƒ / 2,2 (focal length - 16 mm). In the P30 Pro, it became possible to combine video that is shot on a wide-angle module with the product of shooting a telephoto module in one picture - the mode was called Multi-view.

The fourth camera is a depth sensor, the so-called TOF (Time of flight) camera. It helps to blur the background when shooting portraits in both photos and videos. There is, of course, a night mode with multi-frame exposure and smart stabilizer. It will be very interesting to see how this works in combination with a new type of sensor.

The front cameras in both P30 are the same - 32 megapixels, aperture ƒ / 2,0.

The well-known HiSilicon Kirin 30 platform is used as a hardware platform in both Huawei P30 and Huawei P980 Pro – you should not expect any miracles of performance (especially gaming) from smartphones. Built-in memory: 8 GB of RAM and 128/256/512 GB drive for P30 Pro and 6/128 GB for P30. Both smartphones support memory expansion using cards of the proprietary nanoSD standard (a second slot for a SIM card is allocated for this). The operating system at the start of sales is Android 9.0 Pie with a proprietary shell EMUI version 9.1.

The Huawei P30 has a 3650 mAh battery and supports fast wired charging Huawei SuperCharge up to 22,5W. Huawei P30 Pro is already equipped with a 4200 mAh battery and supports Huawei SuperCharge wired charging up to 40 W (they promise to charge 70% in half an hour), as well as wireless charging up to 15 W. P30 Pro, like the last “mate”, can not only charge wirelessly, but also give a charge in this way

Global sales have already begun, Huawei P30 costs 799 euros, for Huawei P30 Pro there are three versions that differ in memory size: 128 GB version costs 999 euros, 256 GB version costs 1099 euros, 512 GB version costs 1249 euros.
