First impressions of OPPO Reno: a smartphone from a new angle

OPPO Reno Standard Edition (or simply OPPO Reno) was introduced back on April 10, so its specifications are already well known. But I managed to spend a day with this smartphone before its European presentation - I hasten to report on my first impressions at the same time as the "world" announcement.

Of course, the main event of this presentation was (more precisely, at the time of writing it “will become”) the announcement of the older OPPO Reno - with a 5G modem (at least a year still completely irrelevant for Russia) and with a 10x hybrid zoom. It is they who should make some noise, flicker in the headlines and increase brand awareness, which is still not very good outside of China. And just the “regular” OPPO Reno, or OPPO Reno Standard Edition, should do the main sales. I will allow myself not to call him such a long and cumbersome name again.

The Reno series should simplify the idea of the OPPO model range, which today is full of letter names: A, AX, RX and with the one-of-a-kind flagship Find X. The name Reno suggests either French cars or a city in the state of Nevada - understand it is forbidden. But at least it is remembered - at least until it is overgrown with the same alphanumeric indices. And this is inevitable.

OPPO Reno smartphones are not positioned by the company as flagships - neither the title device, nor the versions with 10x zoom and 5G. All these are upper-middle class smartphones, competitors to the older Samsung Galaxy A, Xiaomi Mi 9 / Mi MIX 3, the upcoming Honor 20 and the licensed OnePlus. The competition is serious, and OPPO is very important to keep the price in check, and not as usual. Russian prices for the standard Reno will become known a bit later, while Chinese prices are known: from $450 for the 6/128 GB version to $540 for the 8/256 GB version. The Russian representative office of the company promises that our prices “will be pleasant” - it’s hard to believe, taking into account past experience, but if they are close to these figures (translated into rubles), then it’s not bad. What does the user get for this money?

There are two things that stand out about the OPPO Reno. Firstly, the rear panel is unusually designed: lenses of different sizes, a characteristic strip, an unusual ball that causes an attack of nostalgia for the times of Sony Ericsson and helps not to scratch the lenses when you put your smartphone on the back (it also helps to avoid smearing them continuously with your finger). , - this is already from personal experience, so the ball seemed appropriate to me).

Secondly, there are no notches or holes in the screen on the front panel - like in Find X (or rather, like in Vivo NEX / V15), the front camera leaves the case, only not vertically, but at an angle, like a blade from swiss knife. Maybe that's why OPPO decided to hold the world presentation of the smartphone in Switzerland? It looks original, works, as in Find X, well - it extends in about half a second, and retracts in the same amount. In addition, it reacts to falls - in theory, this element should not suffer when it meets the floor. An interesting detail - there is a flash on the back of the throw-out module. So it comes into the light in three cases: if you want to take a self-portrait, if you are going to unlock the smartphone with your face (yes, this user ID system is available), and if you are going to shoot something with a flash.

The selfie camera here is quite ordinary, which is not typical for OPPO - the company is famous for smartphones created specifically for bloggers, narcissists, and just for most of today's youth. But no, here is the usual 16-megapixel module with optics, the aperture ratio of which is ƒ / 2,0. An example of a selfie taken with OPPO Reno is below.

Of course, there is a beautifier, you can blur the background using software methods.

The main camera is also quite boring. The main module is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 with ƒ / 1,7 optics, an additional one is 5-megapixel, it is only responsible for better background blur in portrait mode. Alas, there is no optical stabilizer, as well as optical zoom - when shooting, you can see the XNUMXx zoom icon, but this works the good old crop, which noticeably affects the quality of the picture. An example is below.

By the way, the same main camera (well known from Xiaomi Mi 9, for example) is also installed in the older OPPO Reno - but there it is adjacent to a 13-megapixel periscope camera and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module, so this sub-flagship in terms of photography capabilities tends to Huawei P30 Pro (almost certainly inferior in quality).

The camera software includes both familiar tricks, such as selecting suitable parameters using neural network calculations (“artificial intelligence”) or the same portrait mode, as well as some branded chips. For example, the “chroma boost” mode, in which the smartphone tries very hard to even out the colors in the frame, to make them uniform, but, according to the first sensations, it simply increases the saturation according to tricky algorithms - like any typical AI assistant. I will save more detailed conclusions for a full review.

Another feature is branded filters, which are named in the VSCO style (from R1 to R10), and look more noble than usual. An example is above.

Of course, the 48-megapixel sensor is made according to the Quad Bayer scheme, that is, by default it shoots with a resolution of 12 megapixels, so in order to get a picture of the maximum resolution, you need to go quite deep into the settings. This, of course, does not give any breakthrough in quality.

For night shooting, a camera with fast optics, but without an optical stabilizer, is moderately adapted - it’s hard to make a frame not only unblurred, but also with decent detail. Night mode with multi-frame exposure gluing could help here, but it works, frankly, not at all like in Huawei P30 Pro or Google Pixel 3.

The OPPO Reno hardware platform is well known from the company's camera phone, released at the end of last year, RX17 Pro. We are talking about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, a mid-range platform that combines eight Kryo 360 cores with a clock speed of up to 2,2 GHz and an Adreno 616 graphics accelerator. “flagship”: the device switches quickly between applications, and the camera opens instantly, and it works with photos and videos without any delays. Gaming performance is limited, but OPPO offers to deal with this by launching a special game mode that turns off parallel processes and activates some special software optimization, including one tailored for PUBG Mobile - OPPO works directly with its creators. I can’t say how well all these software tricks work, I didn’t have time to check. Again, it's better to wait for a full test.

RAM in OPPO Reno - 6 or 8 GB, non-volatile - 128 or 256 GB. Memory cards are not supported. There are Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2,4 / 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5 wireless adapters, a GPS / GLONASS receiver and (hallelujah!) NFC module - OPPO, following Vivo, nevertheless drew attention to the needs of the European and American public.

The display in OPPO Reno is not only almost frameless (occupies 93,1% of the front panel area), but is also equipped with an AMOLED matrix: the screen diagonal is 6,4 inches, the resolution is 2340 × 1080 pixels, the aspect ratio is 19,5: 9. The display seems to be bright, the colors are saturated, but working with a smartphone in the sun is not ideally comfortable - everything is visible, it does not go blind, but the image is faded, the high brightness mode is clearly not enough.

The battery is installed here with a capacity of 3765 mAh. After a full day with a smartphone, when it was mainly used as a photo / video camera (390 shots were taken in a day), but there was also a little social networking and browsing, the battery ran down to 50%. It seems that Reno is doing well with autonomy, as well as with fast charging - Super VOOC with its dual battery and a total of 50 W is not here, but there is a "regular" VOOC of the third iteration - 20 watts, a smartphone using a standard adapter and cable can be charge in about an hour and a half.

OPPO Reno also has an on-screen fingerprint scanner - optical or ultrasonic - it's not known, but it works quite well. This is just a completely expected solution, today all and sundry flaunt screen scanners. But the saved mini-jack is an original solution. At the same time, there is no moisture protection, which is primarily due to a retractable element in the case.

I have very good general feelings about OPPO Reno - it is a smart smartphone with a rather interesting design, an original design of the moving block, decent autonomy and good (but nothing more) image quality. Of course, it does not produce a special wow effect, unlike its counterpart with a periscope camera, but if OPPO takes a risk and puts a price of 32-33 thousand rubles on it, it can turn out to be a very good offer.

The material has been added.

Alas, the price was much higher than desired. OPPO will sell Reno for 39 rubles, and sales will start somewhere at the end of May. There are no exact dates, but pre-orders are scheduled for May 990-10.

#OPPO Reno 10x Zoom

And a little about OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, the world premiere of which, as expected, took place today. This smartphone received three cameras with a total range of focal lengths of 16-130 mm (equivalent). At the same time, OPPO claims a range of 16-160 mm, which gives the smartphone its name, but in the shooting application, the choice is between zoom 1x, 2x, and then 6x, despite the fact that the optics provide a 5x zoom, but this is exactly hybrid zoom. However, according to the very first impressions, it is implemented here almost better than in Huawei P30 Pro. The module, which has a higher resolution (13 MP vs. 8) and a better aperture (ƒ / 3,0 vs. ƒ / 3,4), works great in combination with the main 48-megapixel camera.

The smartphone itself looks almost the same as the usual OPPO Reno, which we talked about above, only an additional camera was added on the back panel, and the display became larger - 6,6 inches versus 6,4 inches. Accordingly, for the sake of this, the battery capacity (4065 mAh) has also increased, and the dimensions have grown.

The price of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is known only in Europe (799 euros), as well as the date of the start of sales (early June), nothing is known about the Russian price and date, including representatives of the company. It is very important here, of course, to make your smartphone cheaper than the Huawei P30 Pro, with which it can compete only with an advantage in price. Technologically, he, in principle, does this, although it will be very interesting to compare these gadgets in action. When this can be done is still unclear.

But at least OPPO has definitely succeeded in surprising and making a truly interesting series of smartphones.
