The first beta release of the Android 13 mobile platform

Google presented the first beta version of the open mobile platform Android 13. The release of Android 13 is expected in the third quarter of 2022. To evaluate the new capabilities of the platform, a preliminary testing program is proposed. Firmware builds have been prepared for Pixel 6/6 Pro, Pixel 5/5a 5G, Pixel 4/4 XL/4a/4a (5G) devices. An OTA update has been provided for those who have installed the first test release.

Changes in Android 13-beta1 compared to the second preview:

  • Selective granting of permissions for access to multimedia files is provided. If previously, if you needed to read multimedia files from local storage, you had to grant the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE right, which gives access to all files, now you can separately grant access to images (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES), sound files (READ_MEDIA_AUDIO) or video (READ_MEDIA_VIDEO).

  • For key generating applications, the Keystore and KeyMint APIs now provide more detailed and accurate error indicators and allow the use of java.security.ProviderException exceptions to trap errors.
  • An API for audio routing has been added to AudioManager, allowing you to determine how the audio stream will be processed. Added the getAudioDevicesForAttributes() method to obtain a list of devices through which audio output is possible, as well as the getDirectProfilesForAttributes() method to determine whether audio streams can be played directly.
