Pillars of Eternity 3 is in doubt due to weak Deadfire sales. The authors do not know what is the reason for the failure

Released last May Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire conceded by sales original game. Recently, Obsidian Entertainment Design Director Josh Sawyer spoke on his blog at Tumblrthat the developers have not yet figured out the reasons for its low popularity, and made some assumptions. In addition, he noted that for this reason, the third part may not appear at all, and if the team nevertheless starts to create it, then the game format will have to be revised.

Pillars of Eternity 3 is in doubt due to weak Deadfire sales. The authors do not know what is the reason for the failure

Almost a year after the release of the sale of the first Pillars of Eternity exceeded 700 thousand copies. PC version of Deadfire in the first four months reached marks of 110 thousand units - journalists called this result an outright failure, although the developers avoid such formulations. Sawyer did not give a definitive answer to a fan's question about whether Pillars of Eternity III will be released. Its sales may be even lower than in the case of Deadfire, so the developers will first have to understand what they did wrong. Probably the next game will be significantly different from the previous ones.

Sawyer has several suggestions. Perhaps the first part "fully satisfied the audience's need [for traditional RPGs], and the second was simply not needed." Maybe the reason lies in marketing mistakes - it was necessary to make a brighter advertising campaign. Also, the developer does not exclude that gamers really did not like the game, but here, too, everything is not so simple: it was spoken about as well as the first one (Deadfire rating for PC on Metacritic - 88 out of 100 points, only one point lower than Original), little was written about the shortcomings.

According to Sawyer, it would have been easier for the creators if Deadfire had suffered a "terrible failure." In this case, they would be able to understand what mistakes need to be worked on, and would not repeat them in the third part. Now the developers can only guess. The executive suspects the culprit may be the active-pause real-time combat system, which players enjoy less than turn-based combat in the vein of Divinity: Original Sin 2 - the game is very successful. At the same time, other RPGs with the same system - for example, Pathfinder: Kingmaker - buy well. Sawyer expressed several more versions in Twitter: Perhaps today's gamers are not too interested in direct sequels, or they did not like the art style of Deadfire (although the developer himself likes it more than the aesthetics of the first part). He also noted that the success of the first game could be associated with the first wave Kickstarter popularity (the sequel was financed much later and on a different platform - Fig).

"I'm sure someone reading this knows why Deadfire is selling worse than the first part," Sawyer wrote. β€œI don’t have a definitive answer.” According to According to our reviewer Denis Shchennikov, Deadfire's shortcomings are mainly related to boring secondary tasks, as well as a weak effect of the player's actions on the environment.

One way or another, the studio is doing very well: last year it entered part of Xbox Game Studios and will certainly continue to make big-budget projects. Launch sales of the newest game, The Outer Worlds, acquitted expectations of Take-Two Interactive, so a sequel is almost inevitable.
