Pixar donates OpenTimelineIO project to Linux Foundation

Created under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, the Academy Software Foundation, aimed at promoting open source software in the film industry, presented their first joint project OpenTimelineIO (OTIO), originally created by the animation studio Pixar and subsequently developed with the participation of Lucasfilm and Netflix. The package has been used in films such as Coco, The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4.

OpenTimelineIO includes a post-production format for exchanging data related to editing and editing footage between different departments of the studio responsible for scripting, editing and production. The format itself is not a container for video, but allows you to transfer information about the order and size of excerpts, referring to the reference external media. The project provides an open API that allows you to manipulate this format and integrate its support into third-party projects, as well as a set of plug-ins for converting from other editing formats. Import/Export plugins are prepared for formats such as Final Cut Pro XML, AAF, and CMX 3600 EDL.

In addition to the new joint project, the Linux Foundation is also announced ΠΎ joining to the Academy Software Foundation initiative of new members, including Netflix,
Rodeo FX and MovieLabs. Previously joined companies include Animal Logic, Autodesk, Blue Sky Studios, Cisco, DNEG, DreamWorks, Epic Games, Foundry, Google Cloud, Intel, SideFX, Walt Disney Studios and Weta Digital.

The Academy Software Foundation is seen as a neutral platform for coordinating interaction between different projects, sharing resources and accumulating best practices in areas related to the media industry and film production. The companies that joined the initiative intend to work together to promote open source software, address open licensing issues, manage joint open source projects, and develop open technologies for creating images, visual effects, animation, and sound.
