The release notes for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 (last updated 03/27/2026) indicate that the new Ubuntu Desktop with its Gnome-based environment now requires at least 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of disk space.
Server version 26.04 now requires 1.5 GB of RAM, while 22.04 required only 1 GB, and 18.04 only 512 MB.
With RAM and storage costs rising, this could increase the costs of Ubuntu-based infrastructure for companies and ultimately hit their users' pockets.
By comparison, Windows 11 requires a minimum of 4GB of RAM.
The planned release date for Ubuntu 26.04 is April 23, 2026.
