Plans for the next generation of the SUSE Linux distribution

Developers from SUSE shared the first plans for the development of a future significant branch of the SUSE Linux Enterprise distribution, which is codenamed ALP (Adaptable Linux Platform). The new branch is planned to offer some radical changes, both in the distribution itself and in the methods of its development.

In particular, SUSE intends to move away from the closed-door development model of SUSE Linux in favor of an open development process. If earlier, all development was carried out within the company and after the readiness the result was issued, now the processes of creating a distribution kit and its assembly will become public, which will allow interested parties to track the work being done and take part in the development.

The second important change will be the splitting of the distribution's core foundation into two parts: a stripped-down "host OS" for running on top of hardware and an application support layer focused on running in containers and virtual machines. The idea is to develop in the "host OS" the minimum environment necessary to support and manage the equipment, and run all applications and user-space components not in a mixed environment, but in separate containers or in virtual machines running on top of the "host OS" and isolated from each other. Details are promised to be announced later, but during the discussion, the MicroOS project is mentioned, which develops a stripped-down version of the distribution kit using an atomic installation system and automatic application of updates.
