SUSE developers have shared their initial plans for the development of a future major branch of the SUSE distribution. Linux Enterprise, which is presented under the code name ALP (Adaptable Linux The new branch plans to offer some radical changes, both to the distribution itself and to its development methods.
In particular, SUSE intends to move away from the SUSE training model Linux Behind closed doors, in favor of an open development process. While previously all development was done internally and the result was released once completed, the distribution creation and build processes will now be public, allowing interested parties to monitor the work and participate in the development.
The second major change will be the division of the distribution's core foundation into two parts: a stripped-down "host OS" for running on top of hardware and a layer for supporting applications, focused on running in containers and virtual machinesThe idea is to develop a minimal environment within the host OS, necessary for hardware support and management, and to run all applications and user-space components not in a mixed environment, but in separate containers or virtual machines running on top of the host OS and isolated from each other. Details are promised to be released later, but the MicroOS project, which is developing a stripped-down version of the distribution using an atomic installation system and automatic update application, is mentioned during the discussion.
