Platinum Games: “Both sides are to blame for the cancellation of Scalebound”

More than two years ago, Microsoft Corporation abolished Scalebound, an action game from Platinum Games. Fans of the genre and Xbox One owners were very upset by this fact, because the game was created by Hideki Kamiya, writer and director of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. Many blamed Microsoft for the cancellation, but in a recent interview, Platinum Games CEO Atsushi Inaba explained that both sides were to blame.

According to Microsoft, Scalebound quality didn't match expected, although the game has been in development for several years. The demonstrations really did not impress gamers - main character animation was unnatural and harsh, and fight with a huge boss it looked more boring than big. “It wasn't easy... Both sides failed... didn't do everything we needed to do as a developer. Watching fans get mad at Microsoft for canceling it wasn't easy for us. Because the reality is that when any game in development fails, it's because both sides failed,” Inaba said. “I think there are areas that we could do better, and I'm sure there are areas that Microsoft, as a publishing partner, would like to do better.” Because no one wants the game to be cancelled."

The head of Platinum Games believes that Scalebound taught the studio many painful lessons, but it helped it grow. Unfortunately, Atsushi Inaba cannot disclose all the details of the development of the project, because there are certain rules, but he urges not to blame Microsoft for the cancellation. “The truth is, we don't like Microsoft taking the brunt of fan fury because game development is difficult and lessons have been learned on both sides...” Inaba said. — I wouldn’t say that our experience with Scalebound influenced us to move to self-publishing activities. Honestly, the reality is that we've had a lot of canceled games in the past - that goes hand in hand with making video games." Why the head of the studio is talking about this only now, and not two years ago, when hundreds of thousands of players took up arms against the Xbox platform holder, remains a mystery.
