PlayStation 5 may get Samsung 980 QVO SSD with PCIe 4.0 and QLC memory

One of the key features of the new generation consoles Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be the presence of solid state drives, which will provide them with a significant increase in speed. And now the LetsGoDigital resource has analyzed what kind of SSD can be used in the future PlayStation 5. Yes, this is nothing more than speculation, but reasonable.

As it became known some time ago, the new consoles will receive drives from Samsung. As part of CES 2020 earlier this year, the Korean company introduced the new Samsung 980 PRO SSD. It is made in M.2 format and uses the PCIe 4.0 interface with the NVMe protocol. It is based on MLC flash memory (two data bits per cell), and speed characteristics are promised at the level of 6500 MB / s when reading and up to 5000 MB / s when writing.

Since MLC memory is quite expensive, the above drive will also be quite expensive, in fact, like its predecessors in the PRO series. Therefore, Samsung will certainly release more affordable 980 EVO and 980 QVO models with a high-speed PCIe 4.0 interface. Such trademarks Samsung has already registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), so their release is only a matter of time.

The Samsung EVO series drives usually use the more affordable TLC flash memory, which can store three bits of information per cell, due to which the SSDs themselves are significantly cheaper than the PRO-series models. In terms of performance, EVO drives are about 10% slower in speed, and also have half the data write resource. Therefore, the Samsung 980 EVO drive will offer speeds up to about 5500-6000 MB / s.

In turn, Samsung QVO drives are equipped with QLC memory chips, which are capable of storing four bits of information in one cell. Such memory is even cheaper, but at the same time it has a much smaller resource for writing data. That is, drives based on it are less durable. Samsung 980 QVO will most likely be inferior to 980 EVO in terms of characteristics, but nevertheless it will also offer quite high data read and write speeds.

Of these three models, the Samsung 5 QVO looks like the most likely candidate for the PlayStation 980 drive. For Sony, the decisive argument in favor of this SSD will be that it will be the most affordable of the listed models. Actually, in the current PS4, Sony used the most affordable HDDs from HGST, so it is unlikely that the approach to completing the console will change significantly.
