Pleroma 2.0

Pleroma 2.0

A little less than a year later first stable release, the second major version is presented on International Women's Day pleroma β€” federated social network for microblogging, written in the Elixir language and using the standardized W3C protocol Activity Pub. It is the second largest network in Fediverse..

Unlike its closest competitor, Mastodon, which is written in Ruby and relies on a large number of resource-intensive components, Pleroma is a high-performance server that can run on low-powered systems such as Raspberry Pi or cheap VPS.

Pleroma also implements the Mastodon API, allowing it to be compatible with alternative Mastodon clients such as tusky, Husky from Pleroma 2.0a1batross or fedilab. What's more, Pleroma ships with a fork of the source code for the Mastodon interface (or, to be more precise, the interface Glitch Social - an improved fork of Mastodon from the community) that makes it smoother for users to transition from Mastodon or Twitter to the TweetDeck interface.

In addition to the Mastodon interface, any other frontend can be built into Pleroma, since Pleroma is positioned as a universal framework for building social network servers in Fediverse. This opportunity was used, for example, by the project Mobilizon - a meeting organization server, taking the Pleroma source code for its backend.

Despite the change in the major version, the release cannot boast of an abundance of new visible features, but it is worth noting:

  • removal of deprecated functionality, in particular, support for the OStatus protocol, the oldest protocol in the Fediverse network;
    • this means that from now on, Pleroma will stop federating with non-ActivityPub servers like GNU Social;
  • option to display the type of account (for example, this is a regular user no status, bot or Group);
  • a static frontend that does not require JavaScript to be loaded to display posts to external visitors;
  • "private" mode, in which the frontend does not display information for visitors from the outside;
  • status emoji reactions that will be federated with Mastodon in the future, misskey ΠΈ Honk;
  • increment of the major version of the engine for customizing the interface and adding themes;
  • inclusion of captcha integrated into the backend for registration by default;
  • ignoring users at the domain level in the interface;
  • Lots of internal changes and bug fixes.

Pleroma mascot illustrations are also available from the community to celebrate the release! 1, 2, 3, 4 and others in original thread.
