According to the precepts of Huawei: OPPO expects to develop its own processors

The Chinese company Huawei Technologies was hit by US sanctions precisely in the direction of producing its own HiSilicon processors. The unfortunate example of a competitor does not scare OPPO as the smartphone maker builds up the potential to develop its own mobile processors.

According to the precepts of Huawei: OPPO expects to develop its own processors

Many sources attribute OPPO to being one of the main beneficiaries of the Huawei crisis generated by US sanctions. In China, OPPO is the second largest smartphone maker after Huawei and closes the top five globally. The problems of a competitor will be used by OPPO for a qualitative breakthrough in development.

As the Nikkei Asian Review, OPPO has stepped up its efforts to attract personnel capable of organizing the development of its own processors. The management team is drawn from MediaTek and Xiaomi, the engineering team is from UNISOC, a Chinese processor developer. The specialists hired by OPPO will be concentrated in Shanghai. Efforts are being made to bring in talent from Qualcomm and HiSilicon. The last of the companies is a division of Huawei responsible for the development of processors. New U.S. export control regulations came into effect this month, blocking Huawei and its subsidiaries from accessing services from TSMC and most other contract processor manufacturers.

This OPPO initiative did not appear now, the company hired specialists in this field last year. The company does not deny that it already has the potential to develop processors, but does not want to go into details. HiSilicon has been operating under the wing of Huawei for ten years. Xiaomi has been developing its own mobile processors since 2014, but after the release of the “firstborn” in 2017, it stopped experimenting with their use in serial products. It will take years to establish OPPO's core business, so you should not expect immediate results.
