Confirmed: Microsoft's next generation of consoles will simply be called Xbox

Last week Microsoft presented appearance of the next generation Xbox, and also announced its name - Xbox Series X. The device is the fourth console generation of the company, following the Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Microsoft clearly doesn't want to go the way of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which simply numbers PlayStations sequentially. But Business Insider's eye caught something in the name Xbox Series X.

Confirmed: Microsoft's next generation of consoles will simply be called Xbox

In the photo above, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, Phil Spencer, is introducing the Xbox Series X. The screen says ″THE NEW XBOX SERIES X″. The font for “NEW” is small, followed by ″XBOX″ in huge letters, and below “Series X” in medium font size. Does this mean the next Xbox is just an Xbox and the Series X is one of the models? Business Insider approached a Microsoft representative with this question.

"The name we're using for next generation is simply Xbox," a Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider, "and at the Game Awards you saw that name brought to life with the Xbox Series X."

The next generation of Xbox is called Xbox. It's that simple. It's a basic rebrand, but a significant one. It could help simplify the Xbox console lineup for interested consumers. “Similar to what fans saw in previous generations, the 'Xbox Series X' name allows for additional consoles [to be released] in the future [under the same brand],” a Microsoft spokesperson said.

Confirmed: Microsoft's next generation of consoles will simply be called Xbox

There are currently two models of Xbox One: Xbox One X and Xbox One S. Both followed the original Xbox One, which launched in November 2013. For several years, Microsoft sold an older model of the Xbox One, which was different from both consoles introduced later. All three devices are part of the Xbox One generation. They all play the same games, although the Xbox One X is technically much more powerful than the other two consoles.

If you're a little confused, this is why Microsoft is simplifying the name of the console. At the same time, the statement indicates that the platform holder is already working on other versions of the next generation Xbox. This is consistent with recurring rumors about several models of Microsoft's next generation consoles. However, the company is not yet ready to confirm this. “We're excited to offer fans a look at the next generation of gaming with Xbox Series X,” the spokesperson said, “but beyond that we have nothing more to share.”

Xbox Series X will go on sale during the holiday season 2020.
