Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are created with a focus on Nintendo Switch handheld mode

This year, Nintendo is gearing up to release the first Pokémon from the main series on the Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Both titles are due out at the end of the year, and the company has revealed that they are being developed with a focus on console handheld mode.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa outlined his vision for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield to investors. Unlike Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, which were a remake offshoot of the first Pokémon, Sword and Shield will continue the main series. Because of this, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are designed specifically for handheld mode and without focusing on some of the mechanics that were applied in Let's Go.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee!, which came out last November, were designed to emphasize the enjoyment of the Nintendo Switch in TV mode, such as waving the controller at the TV screen to catch a Pokemon, Furukawa said. Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are being developed to highlight the fun of the Nintendo Switch handheld mode. We want these games to be played not only by old Pokémon fans, but also by consumers whose introduction to the series began with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!
