Buying a stake in Clear will allow United Airlines to introduce biometric identification for air passengers

On Monday, United Airlines announced it had bought a stake in technology company Clear, which uses fingerprint and iris scanning to verify a traveler's identity during pre-flight screening at an airport.

Clear technology is used at 31 airports in addition to stadiums, sports arenas and some Hertz Global Holdings Inc. car rental locations.

United Airlines' investment will help Clear expand its presence at some of the airline's largest airports. Clear will open its check-in facility at Newark Liberty International Airport and expand its passenger service area at George W. Bush Airport in Houston later this summer. The company has also requested permission from the Chicago authorities to open check-in counters at O'Hare International Airport.
