Google Stadia users complain about Chromecast Ultra sticks overheating

Some early adopters of Google's cloud gaming service Stadia are reporting that their Chromecast Ultra sticks are getting extremely hot, forcing the system to shut down mid-game without saving progress. “I was in the middle of a fight in Destiny 2 when suddenly my Chromecast died and lost connection to the network,” wrote Reddit user armadeon7479 in the Stadia thread. “I went to unplug it from the power source and it was very hot.” Has anyone else experienced overheating issues with the new Chromecast Ultra that comes bundled with the Stadia Founder's Edition? I haven't seen any other posts about this."

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention,” Google representative responded. - We know that any heat on the device can be a concern, but we can confirm that the Chromecast Ultra does not have a thermal issue. During normal use (like watching videos on YouTube), the surface of the device can become sensitive, but that's by design. The team conducted extensive testing of hardware, services and games, including long-term Stadia gaming and video sessions, and found no issues with overheating shutdowns.”

However, users were not convinced by such arguments from the search giant. “I can't play a game on Chromecast for more than 10 minutes before the keychain shuts down due to overheating! — another user said under the nickname Raiotech. — It is obvious that the clients who support you and paid for the launch of the new technology had problems, and you responded by denying the problem. This will not convince people to stay on your platform and trust buying things from you. Nothing is perfect - maybe it's a bad batch of Chromecast Ultras from the factory. Whatever it is, admit there is a problem and fix it.”

“I want to point out that when everything works, Stadia works great and I want the platform to be successful,” answered by armadeon7479. - However, you can't say the issue doesn't exist when I've clearly experienced it and other users have stated that it's a Chromecast Ultra issue that predates Stadia. It turns out to be so common that some people have been forced to come up with their own homemade radiators."

“My key fob was incredibly hot and would turn off within 20 minutes after playing. Now it won’t even connect to my home account,” ultv336 said. And some XHeavygunX added: “My key fob also feels very hot just from watching Netflix in 4K or playing a game on Stadia. Last night I was worried it might catch fire because my wife got scared when she accidentally touched the Chromecast, so I turned off the key fob as quickly as I could."

At the time of writing, Google representatives have not returned to the thread to offer further support or provide any advice.
