Lomiri (Unity8) custom shell adopted by Debian

The leader of the UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform and the Unity 8 desktop after Canonical stepped aside, announced the integration of packages with the Lomiri environment into the β€œunstable” and β€œtesting” branches of the Debian GNU / Linux distribution (former Unity 8) and the Mir 2 display server. It is noted that the UBports leader is constantly using Lomiri in Debian, and a few minor changes are required to finally stabilize the work of Lomiri. In the process of porting Lomiri for Debian, obsolete dependencies were removed or renamed, adaptation for the new system environment was carried out (for example, work with systemd was provided), and a transition was made to a new branch of the Mir 2.12 display server.

Lomiri uses the Qt5 library and the Mir 2 display server, which acts as a composite server based on Wayland. In combination with the Ubuntu Touch mobile environment, the Lomiri desktop is in demand to implement the Convergence mode, which allows you to create an adaptive environment for mobile devices, which, when connected to a monitor, provides a full-fledged desktop and turns a smartphone or tablet into a portable workstation.
