On Tuesday, it became known that the Stuttgart prosecutor's office imposed a fine of 535 million euros on Porsche in connection with its participation in the scandal over fraudulent testing of Volkswagen Group diesel cars for the level of harmful substances that erupted in 2015.
Until recently, German authorities were relatively coy about revelations that VW Group brands Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche were using illegal software in their diesel vehicles to hide the true amount of nitrogen oxide emissions that were emitted during real-world driving.
It should be noted that the US authorities took a rather harsh approach to the attempts of the VW Group and its executives to mislead their customers and society as a whole regarding the environmental safety of the cars they sell.
Porsche confirmed receipt of the fine notice, adding that "the fine notice fully concludes the administrative violation investigation" conducted by the prosecutor's office. However, the company noted that it βhas never developed or produced diesel engines.β
βIn the fall of 2018, Porsche announced the complete phase-out of diesel engines and is fully focused on the development of modern gasoline engines, high-performance hybrid powertrains and electric mobility,β the brand said in a statement.
Late last week, it also became known that a judge had finalized an agreement between Fiat Chrysler and the US Department of Justice, according to which the automaker will pay multimillion-dollar fines in connection with environmental damage, as well as $305 million in compensation to customers. βMost car owners will receive a payment of $3075,β Reuters reports. Remarkably, auto parts supplier Robert Bosch GmbH will pay $27,5 million as part of Fiat's settlement with customers because it provided illegal emissions control software.
