Samsung display shipments have dipped and are unlikely to recover anytime soon

Samsung's display division posted total first-quarter revenue of 6,59 trillion won ($5,4 billion) against an operating loss of 0,29 trillion won ($240 million). The losses were mainly due to lower shipments of screens for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Demand for small displays declined and the company's factories were only partly loaded. Meanwhile, the plants still required maintenance, even during downtime. Large-format screens did not annoy the company with losses as much as they could. Thanks to favorable exchange rates and a lower average selling price, operating losses in this area decreased.

In the second quarter, the company expects a further drop in mobile display revenue due to falling demand in the US and Europe, where the coronavirus has played out in earnest. Samsung hopes to improve profitability by offering screens with better design and performance.

As for large format displays, the cancellation of the Tokyo Summer Olympics and other major events will put off demand for large TVs. Therefore, Samsung will focus on premium TV products such as extra-large TVs, 8K TVs and curved monitors.

In the second half of the year, the company will try to fend off uncertainty with the launch of displays for new mobile products (as well as the new products themselves), and will also consolidate its technology leadership by promising foldable smartphone displays, OLED and other novelties. As you know, Samsung is rapidly exiting LCD production. In return, the company hopes to offer a range of quantum dot displays and other new technologies.
