Potential unlocked: Radeon RX Vega 64 is up to 20% faster than GeForce RTX 2080 Ti in World War Z

Lately, AMD, unfortunately, cannot boast of video cards that can compete on equal terms with the flagship solutions of their competitor. But it is all the more interesting to watch the moments when the Reds manage to excel. For example, as the performance testing of video cards in the new World War Z shooter showed, AMD solutions are able to successfully bypass even the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.

World War Z by Saber Interactive is an AMD-optimized game that also uses the Vulkan API. And as you know, this API borrowed a lot from Mantle, an API created by AMD itself. So it's no surprise that Radeon cards perform well in this new game. We would also like to remind you that in the same Doom based on Vulkan, AMD video cards also showed good results.

Video cards in World War Z were tested by the GameGPU resource. The test bench was based on the Core i9-9900K processor overclocked to 5,2 GHz, which virtually eliminates the influence of the processor on the results. And they are, in fact, simply amazing.

At the most popular Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) to date, the best performance was shown by the Radeon VII, Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled (version with stock LSS) and the standard version of the Radeon RX Vega 64. The flagship NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card is located only in fourth place, significantly losing to competitors. I would also like to note that the Radeon RX Vega 56 was able to get ahead of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and RTX 2080.

At the higher Quad HD resolution (2560 × 1440 pixels), the balance of power at the top of the diagram has not changed much, but the difference between AMD and NVIDIA video cards turned out to be not so large. In terms of average frame rate, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti was slightly ahead of the Radeon RX Vega 64, but lost in the minimum frame rate.

Finally, in 4K resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels), NVIDIA's flagship managed to break into first place by several FPS. Here it is also worth noting that the Radeon VII and Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled video cards showed the same results. But the popular Radeon RX 580 sank to the level of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti.

In addition to outstanding results, it will be important to note that AMD video cards are much cheaper than NVIDIA flagships. For example, the Radeon RX Vega 64, which was able to get ahead of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, is almost three times cheaper than the "green" video card. The situation is similar with other AMD and NVIDIA accelerators.

All in all, this is a great demo that shows what a well-implemented low-level API can do. The only pity is that this is rare in the case of AMD video cards. In addition, the example of World War Z demonstrates that in terms of "naked" performance, AMD video cards are quite capable of competing with the opponent's solutions, but they are hindered by the software component.
