Unleashing the potential of the AMD Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards turned out to be quite simple. How editor-in-chief of the German version of Tom's Hardware Igor Wallosek, for this it is enough to increase the power consumption limits (Power Limit) of video cards using SoftPowerPlayTable (SPPT).

This way to increase the performance of video cards is quite simple in terms of implementation, but it can be very dangerous for the video card itself. In addition, at the moment only reference versions of the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT are available on the market, the cooling systems of which may simply not be able to cope with the increased heat dissipation.

To conduct this kind of experiment, it is better to use water blocks. For example, our German colleague used the recently introduced full coverage waterblock from . It is noted that without a more powerful cooling system, the video card is more likely to reach the maximum allowable temperature than to reveal its potential.

In his own experiment, Igor Vallosek increased the power consumption limit of the Radeon RX 5700 XT by an impressive 95%. Despite this, real power consumption has not grown as much: from 214 W to about 250 W. Although sometimes there were jumps in consumption up to 300-320 W, and the core voltage was 1,25 V. In this mode, the clock speeds of the new AMD video card were about 2,2 GHz, which is a very high result.

As for performance tests, the maximum overclocking at the highest power consumption allowed the Radeon RX 5700 XT to bypass the overclocked GeForce RTX 2070 Super and come close to the GeForce RTX 2080 in Shadows of the Tomb Rider. This is really impressive, and also gives hope that AMD's AIB partners will release really powerful proprietary versions of the Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards.
