Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser in public beta

In 2020, Microsoft is rumored to be replacing the classic Edge browser that ships with Windows 10 with a new one based on Chromium. And now the software giant is one step closer to it: Microsoft released public beta version of their new Edge browser. It is available for all supported platforms: Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 as well as for Mac. The company clarified that the beta is still a preliminary release of the software, but it is already "ready for everyday use." You can download it from link

In recent months, the company has improved the browser and added a number of features to it. For example, it touched upon the improvement of energy consumption. And although initially it was only about Chrome, but, eventually, the functions will appear in all browsers based on Chromium.

Edge also has a number of features not found in Google's browser, including:

  • The ability to convert text to speech, allowing you to read the contents of websites;
  • Resource tracking blocking;
  • Ability to customize new tabs;
  • Microsoft Edge Insider Extension Store for extensions (also supported by Google Chrome Web Store);
  • Compatibility mode with Internet Explorer 11.

According to the company, the beta version is the last step before the release, although it should not be expected very soon. It is assumed that the final assembly may appear no earlier than the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. But beta versions will be updated every 6 weeks.

By the way, another novelty for Chrome and Edge browsers has become support for global media control buttons. Now this feature works on all major sites and allows you to control playback on different sites at the same time. To activate, you need to update the browser to the latest build of Canary, then go to edge://flags/#enable-media-session-service, activate the flag and restart the program.
