The South Korean government will start using Linux

The announcement states that initial testing of Linux computers will be conducted within the Department of the Interior. If no security issues are found, the operating system will become more widespread in the future.

The decision was made amid concerns about the cost of continuing to support Windows. Free technical support for Windows from Microsoft will end in January 2020. South Korean officials estimate that switching to Linux and acquiring new computers will cost 780 billion won, or about $655 million.

Nevertheless, before the Linux operating system begins to spread to the PCs of officials, specialists have to do a lot of work. First of all, we are talking about checking the security of the OS, as well as its compatibility with websites and various software that was developed for Windows. The government believes that the introduction of an open source operating system will significantly reduce government costs required to maintain the relevant infrastructure. In addition, such a step will avoid dependence on one operating system.
