The Turris Omnia NG router with OpenWRT-based firmware is unveiled.

CZ.NIC, the registrar of the Czech top-level domain CZ and developer of the free DNS server Knot, has unveiled the Turris Omnia NG router, a continuation of the Turris Omnia device, which has been in production for the past ten years. Like its predecessor, the new router uses its own fork of the OpenWRT open source platform, known as Turris OS. The device is now available for €561. Support and firmware updates will be provided for 10 years.

The device goes beyond a simple router and wireless access point and is positioned as a digital hub for homes and small/medium businesses. In addition to networking capabilities, it provides tools for deploying network-attached storage (NAS). VPN, backup, creating a print server and running arbitrary server applications.

Based on the Sentinel platform, the firmware implements a dynamic firewall with elements for intrusion detection and traffic flow monitoring. The firmware updates automatically, without any user interaction. Management is via a web interface or command line.

The firmware also features a built-in launch capability Linux- containers using the LXC toolkit. Containers can run isolated applications and install custom distributions. Linux and create virtual servers, which appear to users as a separate computer connected to a local network.
