The termination of development of Glimpse, a fork of the GIMP graphics editor

The developers of Glimpse, a fork of the GIMP graphics editor founded by a group of activists who are unhappy with the negative associations arising from the word "gimp", have decided to stop development and move the repositories on GitHub to the archive category. Currently, the project no longer plans to release updates and stops accepting donations.

After Bobby Moss, the leader and founder of the project, left the project, there was no one among the remaining team able to take his place and continue to keep the project afloat. Bobby was forced to leave the project at the request of the employer, who expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the development of Glimpse began to affect the performance of Bobby's direct duties in the workplace (he writes technical documents for Oracle). In addition, due to a change in company policy, Bobby was required to obtain legal confirmation that there was no conflict of interest.

Starting in the second half of 2020, only Bobby and a few outside contributors continued to work directly on the fork, with the remaining contributors bogged down in an attempt to start redesigning the user interface. The problem turned out to be not funding or a lack of users, but the inability to find contributors willing to jump in on non-code related tasks such as parsing bug reports, fixing packaging issues, testing new releases, answering user questions, and maintaining servers. Lack of assistance in these areas made it difficult for the team to scale the project to meet growing demand.

Recall that in 2019, Glimpse forked from GIMP after 13 years of trying to convince developers to change their name. The creators of Glimpse believe that the use of the GIMP name is unacceptable and hinders the spread of the editor in educational institutions, public libraries and corporate environments, since the word "gimp" in some social groups of native English speakers is perceived as an insult and also has a negative connotation associated with the BDSM subculture.
