Applications for e-books on the Android operating system. Part 5. Cloud storage and players

In this last part of the article on Android e-book apps, two topics will be covered: Cloud storage ΠΈ Audio players.
Bonus: list of free libraries with OPDS catalogs.

Summary of the previous four parts of the articleΠ’ 1st part the reasons for which it turned out to be necessary to conduct massive testing of applications for their suitability for installation on e-books were considered in detail, and a list of tested office applications.

In 2st part The article considered the following two groups of applications: bookstores ΠΈ Alternative apps for reading books.

Π’ 3rd part The article considers two more groups of applications: Alternative dictionaries ΠΈ Notes, diaries, planners

Π’ 4st part The article considered only one, but a large group of applications: Games.

Applications for e-books on the Android operating system. Part 5. Cloud storage and players

Cloud storage has gained well-deserved popularity among users of both mobile devices and "real" computers.

They allow you to organize access to your data from various, and even heterogeneous devices; organize data sharing; and also, to a certain extent, β€œforget” about backing up the data contained there. Unless the user himself inadvertently deletes them (or an attacker who has gained access to them; but that's a completely different story).

Many cloud storages also work successfully on Android e-books equipped with a Wi-Fi wireless connection.

However, in the process of testing applications for cloud storage, we also experienced a slight collective shock. It turned out that the cloud storage application from Google does not want to be installed on e-books running under the operating system from Google itself! Storage from Microsoft - no problem, from Amazon and Yandex - no problem, but from Google - well, no way!

Now let's get down to business, i.e. directly to the materials of today's (5th) part of the article.

The application description contains the following information:

  • name (exactly as it appears in the Google Play store; even if it contains spelling or stylistic errors);
  • developer (sometimes applications with the same name can be released by different developers);
  • purpose of the application;
  • required version of Android;
  • link to the ready-made APK installation file, checked in the McCenter;
  • a link to this application in the Google Play store (for a more detailed acquaintance with the application and reviews; you can not download the APK file there);
  • link to download the APK installation file of the application from an alternative source (if any);
  • a note indicating possible features of the application;
  • some screenshots of the running application.

Applications were tested on e-books ONYX BOOX with Android 4.4 operating system ΠΈ Android 6.0 (depending on the requirements of the game).

Players

The topic of audio players for e-books has proven to be challenging in terms of both hardware and software compatibility; and even there were problems with the color scheme and the presence of built-in animation in the application (animation in e-books with their inertial screens will not be decoration in any way).

In terms of hardware compatibility, applications require either a built-in audio channel or the ability to connect wireless headphones via Bluetooth. Both are found in a relatively small number of e-book models; but since such models exist, then a review of such applications would be quite appropriate.

1. AIMP
2. Folder player

List of free libraries with OPDS catalogs

There are a lot of libraries on the Internet, including free ones.
But there are few libraries that support connecting OPDS directories in reader applications. And even then, many of them were blocked on the territory of the Russian Federation for posting illegal content.

What survived (6 catalogs were found) is presented below along with brief characteristics.
Just in case, let me remind you that when connecting directories in reading applications, you need to specify the full path to them, and not just the site address.

1. http://dimonvideo.ru/lib.xml
A comment:
Well structured catalogue, large number of books; but mostly by little-known authors.

2. http://www.zone4iphone.ru/catalog.php
A comment:
A well-structured catalogue, a large number of books, mostly by "classic" and little-known authors.

3. http://coollib.net/opds
A comment:
The catalog categories are too large, which can make it difficult to search. There are a large number of books, including translated and in foreign languages. Lots of self-publishing.

4. http://f-w.in/opds
A comment:
Mostly fantasy books. Structurization, as such, is absent - everything is folded in one folder.

5. http://m.gutenberg.org/ebooks/?format=opds
A comment:
Basically, books whose copyrights have gone into the "public domain". There are very few books in Russian.

6. http://fb.litlib.net
A comment:
Normal structuring, a large selection of books. Lots of self-publishing.
Downloading books can "slow down", be patient.

Applications for e-books on the Android operating system. Part 5. Cloud storage and players

This is the end of our long article in five parts about applications that can be installed on e-books running under the Android OS.

What conclusion can be drawn from the published list?

A modern "advanced" e-book under the Android OS with a touch screen is not just a "reader", but a multifunctional device; which, despite the existing technical limitations, is still capable of performing many more functions, in addition to reading texts.

Thank you for your attention!
