Valve has officially unveiled Half-Life: Alyx. This will be a full-fledged part of the Half-Life series, created specifically for virtual reality headsets. Support for Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality devices has been announced.
The events of Half-Life: Alyx take place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. In the role of Alyx Vance, you need to organize resistance against the Alliance, whose influence has increased many times after the incident at Black Mesa. All the inhabitants of the planet were herded into cities, including the main character and her father, Doctor Eli Vance. In the underground, Alix continues her scientific work and creates technologies that will become your tool in the war against the Alliance.
Half-Life: Alyx will offer interaction with the environment, solving puzzles, exploring the world and fighting with opponents. “Learn to aim through a broken wall or dodge a barnacle and take an incredible shot. Search the shelves for medical kit or ammo. Hack alien interfaces using a variety of tools. Throw a bottle through the window to distract the enemy. Rip the headcrab off your face and throw it at an Alliance soldier,” the game description reads.
Valve also promises owners of the Valve Index headset who purchased the device before the end of 2019, bonuses in the form of additional content: skins for Alyx’s weapons, themed content for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, as well as the Half-Life: Alyx environment in the home world of SteamVR.
But why did the company choose virtual reality headsets for such a hotly anticipated return? According to Valve head Gabe Newell, VR is what made the developers finally bring back the series. “Everyone at Valve is excited to return to the world of Half-Life. Virtual reality has filled us with energy. We have invested a lot in this technology. But we're also game developers at heart, and dedicating ourselves to such an ambitious VR game is exciting,” he said. “Bringing our efforts into the form of Half-Life feels like the culmination of things that mean a lot to us: truly great games, breakthrough technologies and open platforms. We look forward to the day when people can try the game for themselves."
