Problem with missing NTFS3 module maintenance in Linux kernel

The Linux kernel mailing list noted problems with maintaining the new implementation of the NTFS file system, open sourced by Paragon Software and included in the Linux kernel 5.15. One of the conditions for the inclusion of new NTFS code in the kernel was to ensure continued maintenance of the code as part of the kernel, but since November 24 last year, any activity in the development of the open source NTFS3 codebase has ceased, the assigned maintainer has not been in touch, error messages have been ignored, and submitted patches are not considered for inclusion.

Also noted is the specific attitude of the NTFS3 maintainers towards the corrections sent before the connection was lost - the patches were either silently applied to the code base without prior review, or were ignored without any explanation. Attempts by a developer interested in the development of NTFS3 to discuss the current situation in personal correspondence, as well as an offer to help with maintenance and take on some of the responsibilities, remained unanswered. The intentions of the head of Paragon Software to open additional tools for NTFS also remain only promises.

As for further actions in the situation if maintenance is not restored, it is proposed to transfer NTFS3 to the β€œorphaned” category and remove the driver from the kernel, so as not to create the illusion of NTFS support, in fact delivering a still crude unmaintained implementation with uncorrected mistakes.
