While the next-generation 5G mobile technology has not been widely adopted yet, Samsung's 5G smartphone sales in 2019 exceeded the company's expectations with 6,7 million units.

Samsung launched the world's first 5G smartphone, the Galaxy S10 5G, which was released to coincide with the launch of South Korea's 5G networks in April last year.

Since then, Samsung has released four more 5G models: Galaxy Note 10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, Galaxy A90 5G, and Galaxy Fold 5G.

At the start of IFA 2019 in Berlin, Samsung had sold just 2 million 5G devices and expected to sell just 2019 million units by the end of 4. However, sales volumes were much higher, accounting for a significant share of the global sales of devices with support for next-generation mobile networks.

As of November last year, the company controlled 53,9% of the global 5G smartphone market, according to Counterpoint Research. However, 5G models account for only 1% of global smartphone sales in 2019.

This number is expected to rise significantly in 2020 compared to last year, as 5G-enabled models are forecast to account for about 18% of total smartphone shipments.

Samsung also announced plans to launch the Galaxy Tab S6 5G tablet in South Korea in the first quarter of this year.
