The CentOS project created a group for the development of solutions for automotive systems

The CentOS Project Governing Council approved the formation of the Automotive SIG (Special Interest Group), which is regarded as a neutral platform for the development of projects related to the adaptation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for automotive information systems and for organizing interaction with specialized projects, such as AGL (Automotive Grade Linux).

Among the goals of the new SIG-group is mentioned both the creation of new open source software for automotive systems, and the use of existing upstream projects. As a result, it is planned to organize the assembly and maintenance of a specialized version of CentOS for automotive information systems, created on the basis of the RHEL for Edge product. The work will be carried out in test collaboration with the Fedora IoT working group and using some of the developments already created in Fedora, prepared for embedded systems.

It is noted that automotive information systems are on the verge of an evolutionary leap associated with the transition from using a set of isolated embedded systems (ECU, Electronic Control Unit) connected via the CAN bus to applying the concept of edge computing. The observed paradigm shift is expected to enable Linux-based solutions to lead the transformation of automotive information systems into a smart edge device, and the created group will become a platform for collaborative work on creating Linux solutions that correspond to the new paradigm.
