Debian Project Announces Debian Social Services

Debian Developers presented set of services Debian Socialthat will be posted on the site. debian.social and are aimed at simplifying communication and content exchange between project participants. The ultimate goal is to create a safe space for developers and project supporters to share their work, showcase results, connect with peers, and share knowledge.

The following services are currently running in test mode:

  • pleroma.debian.social (using software pleroma) is a decentralized microblogging platform similar to Mastodon, Gnu Social and Statusnet;
  • pixelfed.debian.social (using software pixelfed) - a photo sharing service that can be used, for example, to post photo reports;
  • peertube.debian.social (using software PeerTube) is a decentralized video hosting and broadcasting platform that can be used to host video tutorials, interviews, podcasts, and recordings of talks from conferences and developer meetings. For example, all videos from Debconf conferences will be uploaded to Peertube;
  • jitsi.debian.social (using software Jitsi) - a system for videoconferencing via the Web;
  • wordpress.debian.social ((using software WordPress) is a developer blogging platform;
  • writefreely (using software WriteFreely) is a decentralized blogging and note-taking system. Experiments are also underway with the deployment of a decentralized blogging system based on the platform Plume;
  • In the distant future, the possibility of creating a messaging service based on Mattermost., communication platform based
    Matrix and a service for exchanging audio files based on funkwhale.

Most of the services are decentralized and support federation to interact with other servers. For example,
using a Pleroma account, you can follow new videos on Peertube or images on Pixelfed, as well as leave comments on decentralized networks Fediverse and interact with other services that support the ActivityPub protocol. To create an account in the services, it is proposed create a request at salsa.debian.org (requires an account with salsa.debian.org). In the future, it is planned to organize authentication directly through salsa.debian.org using the OAuth protocol.
